Industrial Recycling Yard | Brisbane, Queensland

Rino has initiated a huge five-year plan that involves a significant, multi-million-dollar capital investment in people, technology, and plant, with plant upgrades alone dramatically improving ethical standards, environmental sustainability and all aspects of job and site safety.

With the new recycling plant now under construction a trial of TRUEGRID PRO PLUS has been installed within the temporary site at Main Beach Road, Pinkenba to test the effectiveness and performance of TRUEGRID in its ability to: carry heavy loads, reduction in water use, reduce airborne dust, reduce sediment runoff, ability to maintain infiltration over time.

Challenges

  1. Reduce the amount of water use and associated sediment runoff!

Large equipment, with high traffic volume, compacts the existing ground. To mitigate dust, water trucks are used which in turn created a consistent breakdown of the surface and run off of sediment.

  1. Reduce the amount of sediments, organic matter and contaminents transferred to other locations !

Like many industrial yards in Australia, the RINO yard is a mix of pervious and impervious surfaces. There is a high volume of trucks traveling across these different surfaces. Due to type of materials being transported, the unsealed surfaces and dust mitigation measures needed, mud is created, then transferred onto roadways within the site and external roadways.

  1. Performance of TRUEGRID as a surface treatment with load bearing capacity!

With Vehicles of 42 tonnes or greater the installation must be able to handle the trafficable loads.

  1. Infiltration & clogging of permeable pavement!

Multiple lab studies have been conducted throughout Australia, measuring the drying and wetting effects on clogging and pollutant removal through porous pavements. This trial will assess the short to medium term effects of clogging and infiltration.

Implementation

  1. Existing grade. The site was prepared with minimal excavation or disturbance to the existing conditions. Enough depth excavated at both ends to make sure the TRUEGRID finished level with the concrete placed on each of the roadway.
  2. Transitions and natural flow. Due to the slope on the site, water would pool at the lower end against the existing concrete. Geofabric was placed in this area to direct the water further down the sloped edge of the concrete where it flowed away, rather than ponding under the existing concrete driveway.
  1. Preparing the subgrade, Infiltration, and detention layer. Because the ground was dry and well compacted, a depth of 50mm was allowed, utilizing a Rino 20mm recycled aggregate product produced onsite.
  1. Leveling of Subgrade. Utilising only equipment available on site, a spreader bar was attached to level.
  1. Installation of TRUEGRID Permeable Pavement.
  1. Stacking and anchoring. Due to the roadway being on a bend and having multiple connections. The grid was anchored using galvanised pins.
  1. TRUEGRID Permeable Pavement fill. Although the job may have been more refined using a skid steer there is something majestic about having a 30-tonne loader drive onto the empty TRUEGRID and dump the gravel 14m3 at a time.
  1. Over Fill of Pavement layer. In this project 50mm of gravel was left on top of the TRUEGRID to cater for the metal tracked excavators that crossed from side to side to manage the waste.
  1. Leveling. A 20-tonne grader was used to level the roadway.

Outcome

Collaborating with Chief Engineer for RINO, Raj Bullar, was seen as an opportunity for both companies to merge on their mutual commitment to innovation, and sustainable business practices using 100% recycled products from two 100% Australian Owned and manufactured, Queensland based, companies.

The TRUEGRID was easy to install using our onsite team and has stood up to the heavy loads without issue
