Heavy Vehicle Grass Accessway | Poplar Steet Ipswich, Queensland

This project involved locating a new telecommunication tower on private land. The challenge was to deliver all weather access to heavy vehicles for ongoing maintenance on the Tower without impacting on the landowner’s current amenity of a large grassed open space.

Challenges

The soil within the site is classified generally as black soil which becomes boggy when wet, and cracks significantly when dry. Significant impact was caused to the site during construction of the Tower and this situation was not acceptable to the Landowner long term. The ongoing maintenance of the Phone Tower required stability for a large 40T crane to not only access the site but to have a stable platform beside the tower that would allow it to work at height.

Our Approach

Together with PowerTrak Civil as the contractor, the heavy vehicle grass access road project will use TRUEGRID PRO PLUS.

TRUEGRID PRO PLUS has a compressive strength of over 8000 PSI when filled and is a fully engineered solution for heavy commercial use.

TRUEGRID PRO PLUS has deep cells which allows sufficient depth for grass to thrive and roots to be protected which made Pro Plus the right choice for this project.

Implementation

To deliver the load carrying capacity in accordance with the Engineering Design for a 40T crane on black soil:

The project includes:

• 250mm was excavated from the access path,
• A 400gsm non-woven Geofabric was installed to keep the Sub soil dry,
• To suit the grass infill, a 200mm deep mix of 19mm angular gravel and course sand was installed and compacted in 100mm layers,
• TRUEGRID PRO PLUS was then laid and filled with a sandy Loam,
• The area was then turfed and watered as required.

The works were completed within the week with little downtime or disruption to the Landowner. The result is a grass roadway that can carry Heavy Loads, including a crane standing station beside the Tower, without impacting on the Landowner or their enjoyment of the site.

Outcome

The Landowner requested some variations to the work through the client, Waveconn, which the team where able to implement immediately. This helped deliver a long-term solution that met the needs of both the client and the Landowner.
